Braden Johnson scored a pair of goals while adding an assist on another score to pace the Maryville University men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Upper Iowa University Friday evening at Maryville Field. The contest was the season opener for both squads.
What Happened – The Saints cracked the scoreboard first in the 29
th minute as
Ricardo Andrade scored from six-yards out to give Maryville a 1-0 lead.
Dom Riggio and Johnson were credited with assists on the play. Johnson scored his first career goal in a Saints uniform in the 53
rd minute as he placed a cross from Andrade in to the back of the net to extend the lead to 2-0. The Peacocks cut the advantage in half in the 67
th minute as they scored to make the score 2-1. Johnson put the game out of reach in the 80
th minute as he took a pass from
Mirza Hasecic and hit a strike into the left side of the net to put Maryville ahead 3-1.
Inside the Numbers – The Saints held a 17-6 advantage in shots with nine of strikes being on goal. Andrade paced the Maryville attack with four shots while Hasecic added three.
Liam Walraven earned his first career win with a pair of saves.
