Truman State Edges Saints with 1.5 Seconds Left to Spoil 28-Point Efforts by Barton and Monis

Mary Barton scored on a driving layup with 2.9 seconds left to put Maryville up 77-76, but Truman State converted a layup of its own with 1.5 ticks remaining as the Bulldogs handed the Saints a heartbreaking 78-77 defeat Saturday afternoon in Kirksville, Mo. The Saints had a chance to win it at the buzzer but the potential game winner did not find the bottom of the basket. The loss spoiled a career-high 28 points by Abby Monis, while Barton tied her career best for the second straight game by also scoring 28 points.
 
What Happened
In a back-and-forth contest, Truman State edged ahead 54-52 entering the fourth quarter. UU Longs sank a 3-pointer to push the Saints ahead. TSU scored the next seven points to retake the lead. The Saints trailed 73-65 with 3:28. Monis hit a jumper but Truman made two free throws. With 2:38 left, Jayda Jansen scored in the lane to start a 10-1 rush. Barton drilled a triple to get the Saints to 75-72.
 
The Bulldogs made one free throw before Monis sank a 3-pointer with just over a minute to play to bring Maryville to within 76-75. The Saints got a defensive stop and the ball back with 31 seconds to play. Maryville missed but grabbed the offensive rebound. After a timeout, Barton took the ball down the right side of the lane and flipped in a layup with 2.9 seconds to play. Truman called timeout to advance the ball into its offensive end. Maddie Re collected a long pass on the left side and scored the game winner with 1.5 ticks left. The Saints called their final timeout and inbounded the ball in their own end. However, a long 3-pointer from the top of the key missed its mark as Truman escaped with the thrilling victory.
 
Monis sank 13-of-18 shots from the field and added eight rebounds. Barton tied her career best for the second straight game and hit five 3-pointers en route to her 28 points. She also dished out eight assists. Karlee Feldman had a team-high nine rebounds for Maryville. Jansen converted all three of her 3-pointers and finished with 14 points.
