Maryville's wrestling team made the trip to Topeka, Kan., to face Newman in a dual match but the Jets dealt the Saints a 27-16 defeat. Maryville won four of the matches in the afternoon but could not overcome an early deficit.
Tyler Kreith opened the match at 125 and posted a 10-5 decision to give Maryville the early lead. However, Newman prevailed in the next four bouts to take the lead. At 165, Tyler Harrington rolled to an 11-1 major as the Saints tried to rally. John Anderson notched a 7-6 victory at 197, while Logan Radik recorded a fall at 4:59 in the heavyweights.
Next up for the Saints will be competitions in two different locations Saturday, Feb. 1. Maryville will take on Ouachita Baptist in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match, and the Saints will also send a squad to the Missouri Valley Open.
