Chesterfield, Mo. -- The Maryville University Division I hockey team set a few milestones over the weekend of January 24 and 25. With a pair of wins over the Northern Illinois Huskies, Maryville equaled their win total from 2018-19 with 11 wins with 12 games to go. Johnny Massara also scored his first collegiate shutout in the process.
Things started off with a 5-0 win on Friday evening. Maryville out shot the Huskies 29-15 by game's end. After a scoreless first period,
Jack Harrison scored at 14:43 of the middle frame.
TJ Prexler continued his solid year, netting his 13th goal of the season with under two minutes to go in the period, doubling Maryville's lead. The Saints would pour it on more in the third period as
Christian Alvegran scored two goals with
Damian Caringi's lone goal sandwiched in between. Massara may have only had 15 saves in his shutout, but he made several key saves early on.
In the second game of the weekend set, it felt tighter, but the shots were coming at a ferocious pace. The two teams combined for more than 70 shots with the Saints having 42 of those blasts. Maryville got on the board first with a goal at 10:56 of the first period by defenseman Phil Kemmer. The first period would end with a 1-1 score. The Saints then got a goal from
Brad Boudreau at 6:34 of the second on a breakaway and then minutes later,
Trevor Henson fired it toward net through traffic and it found the back of the net for a 3-1 lead. Henson's goal would prove to be the game winner as Northern Illinois scored a power play goal two minutes into the third period.
Kole Mudra sealed the win with an empty net goal with under a minute to go.
Arren Romeril made 24 saves on 26 shots in the victory.
The Saints improved to 11-15-1 and will face another team from east of the border as Illinois State comes to St. Louis for two games on January 31 and February 1. Oklahoma University will be in town for a Sunday afternoon game as well. All game are at the new Maryville University Hockey Center.
