Tusculum Recap
The Maryville men's lacrosse team scored three times in the third quarter and powered to an 8-4 victory at Tusculum Monday afternoon in Greeneville, Tenn.
Jacob Allen led the way with two goals and an assist, while
Ty Wenck tallied twice. Goalie
William DeVinney came up with 12 saves to guide the defensive efforts.
What Happened
The first quarter expired without either team finding the back of the net, but the Saints jumped ahead with two quick goals in the second. The Saints won the faceoff, and
Ty Wenck slotted home the game's first goal 50 seconds into the quarter. Maryville again was successful at the dot, and
Ethan Olson converted a man-up chance for a 2-0 lead at the 13:46 mark. Saints goalie
William DeVinney made eight straight saves to start the game but Tusculum took advantage of a two-man down situation and scored just before halftime.
The Saints dominated at the start of the third and drew a penalty on Tusculum.
Jacob Allen send a low shot into the right-hand corner for a 3-1 advantage three minutes into the second half. The Pioneers had a shot on goal but DeVinney made a save and started a quick transition. After a long pass,
Parker Lee sniped in a shot to extend the margin to 4-1. The Saints won another faceoff, and drew another penalty.
Jake Foster took a pass, curled around the Tusculum net and tucked in a shot for a 5-1 lead at the 8:35 mark.
On the first possession of the fourth quarter,
Jake Socia advanced the ball into the offensive end and fed Allen who fired the ball between the goalie's legs for a 6-1 margin. The Pioneers tallied two straight goals but Socia answered with a transition score and a 7-3 cushion with 6:47 remaining. Wenck added his second goal to seal the victory. The Saints went 3-for-6 in man-up situations and won nine of 15 at the faceoff dot.
