Barton Breaks Career Assists Record and Monis Double-Double Boosts Saints Past Bellarmine

Mary Barton scored 23 points and broke the career record for assists as the Maryville women's basketball team cruised to a 93-70 triumph over Bellarmine. Abby Monis posted her second straight double-double with 20 points and 18 rebounds. All five Saints starters reached double figures in scoring.
 
What Happened
For the second straight game, the Saints exploded out of the gate and took control early. Barton scored on a layup, and Jayda Jansen nailed a 3-pointer. Monis and Jansen connected on consecutive jumpers for a 9-0 lead and forced a Bellarmine time out. The Knights finally scored at the 6:32 mark of the game, but the Saints tacked on a 7-0 burst. Barton scored in the lane and added a free throw. UU Longs scored on a driving layup, and Monis' layup was good for a 16-2 cushion. Up 23-8, Maryville put up the final seven points of the quarter to go up 28-8 and shot 64.7 percent in the opening 10 minutes.
 
The Saints stretched the run as they opened the second quarter by scoring the first six points of the contest to extend the advantage to 34-8 at the 7:28 mark. Barton hit a jumper as the Saints took a 49-17 lead with 2:42 left in the half before settling for a 51-23 margin. The Saints scored eight straight points midway through the third quarter and built a 59-25 lead with 6:47 left in the quarter. Maryville built the lead to as many as 37 points, its largest lead in any game this season.
 
Barton broke the previous record of 344 career assists and now has amassed 347 in her four seasons. Jansen added 18 points, Longs tallied 11 points, while Stidham notched 10 points. The Saints pulled down 50 rebounds and outboarded Bellarmine by 14.
