Jackson, Tenn. – The Maryville baseball team opened the 2020 campaign by earning a split with Union University at Fesmire Field in Jackson, Tenn. The Saints were held to a single hit in the opener as the Bulldogs won 6-2.
Wyatt Elbe provided the offensive fireworks with a grand slam to push the Saints to a 6-0 victory Saturday afternoon.
Game One:
The Saints cracked the scoreboard first in the top of the second as
Elias Stevens lifted an infield fly to score
Ryan Waller from third to give Maryville a 1-0 advantage. The Bulldogs answered in the home half of the frame with four runs to take a 4-1 lead. The Saints drew a run closer in the sixth inning as Stevens was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to score
Cade Schares as it made the score 4-2. Union put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs to extend the lead to 6-2. The Bulldog pitching staff limited Maryville to only one hit in the contest.

Game Two:
Maryville broke the game wide open in the third inning as
Desmond Woods started the scoring with an RBI single to stake the Saints to a 1-0 lead. Elbe then belted a grand slam home run down the left field line to give Maryville a 5-0 advantage.
Alex Hoff scored on a fielder's choice by Schares in the fourth frame to extend the Maryville lead to 6-0 and that is all that the Saints needed as
Ryan Louck and
Ryan Scharf combined for a three-hitter to give Maryville the split.
