Jansen's 25 Points and Stidham's Perfect Shooting Lead to 71-53 Victory over UMSL

The Maryville women's basketball team jumped on the University of Missouri-St. Louis with a 12-0 run to open the game and eased to a 71-53 victory. Jayda Jansen, this week's Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week, continued her strong all around play with 25 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists. Hunter Stidham had a perfect night from the field, hitting all six field goal attempts, including going 4-for-4 from 3-point range, en route to 18 points. Karlee Feldman hauled down 10 rebounds for Maryville.
 
What Happened
The Saints swarming defense staked the home side to a 12-0 lead to start the game. UMSL missed its first six shots of the game and had five turnovers. Stidham drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key to ignite the run, and Olivia Kastens had a driving layup. Antoinette Mussorici sank two free throws before Jansen scored on a layup and a triple for a 12-0 lead at the 6:02 mark. The Tritons finally got on the scoreboard with 4:25 left in the quarter. Maryville pushed the margin to as much as 21-6 and took a 23-9 edge after 10 minutes.
 
The Saints tallied the first seven points of the second and built its largest lead at 30-9. UMSL chipped away and used a late 11-0 run to trim the deficit. Jansen hit a wing 3-pointer as Maryville's margin at halftime stood at 37-24. The Saints shot 56 percent in the first half, including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, but hurt themselves with turnovers.
 
Maryville scored the first five points to start the third and rebuilt a 42-24 cushion. The advantage grew to 49-29 on a Mussorici triple and Carsyn Fearday layup. The Tritons scored six straight but Maryville answered with seven of the next 10 points before settling for a 58-41 lead heading into the fourth.
 
UMSL opened the fourth on an 8-2 run to close to 60-49 before the Saints answered with an 11-0 burst to seal the victory. Stidham made one free throw, and Mussorici drained a trey. Kirby sank two at the stripe, before another Jansen 3-pointer and a jumper by Kastens pushed the advantage to 71-49. The Saints shot a season-high 52.1 percent, including going 10-for-15 from 3-point range. Mussorici added 16 points, a team-high five assists and three steals.
