Saints Defense Clamps Down on UIS in 75-45 Triumph

The Maryville women's basketball team held Illinois Springfield without a field goal for 12:12 and cruised to a 75-45 triumph Saturday afternoon in Moloney Arena. Antoinette Mussorici scored 21 points and handed out six assists, while Taylor Kirby came off the bench for 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
 
What Happened
UIS scored to trim the Maryville lead to 7-5 with 3:46 left in the first quarter. Carsyn Fearday and Mussorici scored back-to-back buckets for the Saints. Two free throws by the Prairie Stats brought them to 13-9 after the first quarter.
 
The Saints embarked on a 21-0 run to start the second quarter and blew the game open. Maryville's defense shut out UIS for nearly nine minutes. Karlee Feldman powered up for two layups inside, and a Kirby jumper in the lane built a double-digit lead. Two hoops by Mussorici, and a layup by Hunter Stidham pushed the advantage to 25-9. Kate Rolfes splashed in a 3-pointer and followed with a layup for a 30-9 lead with 2:23 left to play. UIS finally scored a basket with 1:34 before halftime, ending a 0-for-14 drought. Maryville's defense limited UIS to just five points in the second quarter and 14 in the first half to take a 34-14 lead into halftime.
 
In the third quarter, the Maryville lead never dipped below 18. The Saints led 58-32 after 30 minutes of play. The Saints pushed the advantage to as much as 35 points and cruised to the 30-point victory.

The 30-point winning margin is the largest since the Saints defeated Urbana 99-52 Dec. 19, 2018, and the largest in a GLVC game since beating Missouri S&T 86-55 Jan. 24, 2015.
