Fulson Fires Saints Past Flyers

St. Louis, Mo. – Senior Sammi Fulson capped off a come-from-behind victory Friday afternoon for the Maryville University women's soccer team with an overtime blast that pushed the Saints past the Lewis University Flyers 3-2.

The Run of Play – Senior Amanda Kaltwasser had two breakaway opportunities in the first half, only to be denied by a charging Lewis goalkeeper. Senior Elyse Waterhouse made back-to-back sprawling saves in the 25th minute but was beaten in the 27th minute as Lewis took a 1-0 lead.

The Flyers scored again in the 61st minute to take hold of the dangerous 2-0 lead. The Saints got back into the game in the 69th minute when Molly Krispin put Madison Canoy into space with a precise one-time touch. Canoy then sped into the box and drove a ball on the ground to Kaltwasser who tapped in her team-leading fifth goal of the season and made the score 2-1. Maryville continued to press but couldn't find an equalizer until the final minute of play. With 28 seconds left on the clock, sophomore Lexi Gentry sprinted to the corner flag to take a corner kick for one last offensive chance. Gentry whipped a ball in from the corner spot with her right foot and recorded the rare soccer feat of an Olimpico which is a goal scored directly from the corner kick. The match was headed to overtime tied at two thanks to the late game heroics.

In the third minute of overtime, a ball squirted out to the top of the box from a corner kick and Fulson made one defender miss before firing home a rocket into the upper 90 and giving the Saints a come from behind 3-2 victory.

Inside the Numbers – The overtime strike from Fulson was the first goal of her career.
