Saints Eliminated from GLVC Tournament After Penalty Shootout Loss to UIS

Indianapolis, Ind. – The Maryville University men's soccer team fell in the GLVC tournament semifinals Friday evening after a 4-2 penalty shootout decision in favor of the two-seeded Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars. Bryce Dickerson notched a goal in the second half to force the match into overtime and eventually penalty kicks.

The Run of Play – Maryville pressed early with Ben Brodie getting a scoring chance in the second minute and the Saints being awarded two corner kicks in the first eight minutes of play, but it was UIS who struck first. The Prairie Stars scored in the 34th minute and carried that lead into the second half.

Ricardo Andrade hit the post in the 59th minute as the Saints got closer to tying the match. In the 74th minute, Cedric Sengl lofted a free kick into the box and Dickerson was able to corral it and smash it home to tie the match at 1. After two ten-minute overtimes, the match went to a penalty shootout.

Despite penalty kick goals by Sengl and Dom Riggio, UIS took the semifinal match after making their first four penalties.

Inside the Numbers – Maryville created seven corner kicks and did not allow one for UIS.
