St. Louis, Mo. – The Maryville University men's soccer team took down McKendree University Sunday afternoon in a thrilling first round match of the GLVC tournament.
Ricardo Andrade put the Saints ahead early, but a second half equalizer sent the match to overtime and eventually penalty kicks. Goalkeeper
Nick Hemann stopped three penalties and gave way for defender
Dom Riggio to bury home the winning penalty kick and give the Saints a 10-9 edge.

The Run of Play – The No. 3 seed Saints struck first when Andrade scored directly from a free kick from 20-yards out. It was the third goal of the season for the All-GLVC second team winger and got him to 14 points on the season. In the 12
th minute,
Cedric Sengl had a prime opportunity at the top of the box but struck the shot right at the goalkeeper. The best chance for the Bearcats came in the 29
th minute when
Fabian Wetl cleared an attempt off the line to keep the match scoreless.

McKendree tied the match up in the 60
th minute and continued to press for the remaining second half and sent the match to overtime. Nothing was going in overtime period as no shots were put on goal, so the match went to penalty kicks.

The Saints fell behind early with two misses in the pk's, but Hemann made two big saves against the first five shooters to keep the match alive.
Carter Reiss stepped up to the spot needing to make his penalty to prolong the game and he buried it into the left side. The Saints and Bearcats both rattled off six consecutive makes to make the score 9-9. Hemann stepped into net to face Correa from McKendree who had already scored early on in the shootout. Hemann lunged to his left to stop the rocket from the Bearcat forward. The save set up a redemption shot for Riggio who blasted home the winner straight up the middle and gave the Saints a 10-9 shootout victory.
