St. Louis – The Maryville baseball team could not overcome the long ball as the Saints dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Hillsdale College Saturday afternoon at Weber Field. The Chargers hit a pair of home runs en route to a 5-2 victory in the opening game of the season and then only needed a solo blast in the nightcap to defeat Maryville 1-0.
Game One:
The Chargers grabbed the early lead with two runs in the first inning and added a run in the third to take a 3-0 advantage. The Saints cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth frame as
Alex Hoff and
Michael Gould each drove in a run to cut the Hillsdale lead to 3-2. The Chargers extended its lead with a run in the seventh and eighth frames to make the score 5-2.

Game Two:
Hillsdale scored the lone run of the game on a home run over the right field wall in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Chargers starting pitcher David Toth took control of the game by going the distance and tossing a no-hitter while striking out 10 batters. The Saints did have a chance in the bottom of the seventh as
Austin Tapella ripped a long fly ball to the warning track in right field, only to see it caught for the final out of the game.
Kaleb Huxford tossed a gem for Maryville as he allowed only five hits and struck out seven Hillsdale batters.
