Saints Baseball Swept by Hillsdale

St. Louis – The Maryville baseball team dropped a pair of games to Hillsdale on a cloudy and wet Sunday afternoon at Weber Field. The Chargers took the first game of the day 4-2 and then scored nine runs over the last two innings of the nightcap to defeat the Saints 10-3.
 
Game One: 
Hillsdale opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to grand an early 2-0 lead. The Chargers added runs in the fourth and fifth frames to extend the lead to 4-0. The Saints cut the Hillsdale lead in half in the bottom of the sixth as Matt Schuler ripped a triple into centerfield to drive in Ben Hopkins and Austin Tapella to make the score 4-2. Maryville could get no closer as Hillsdale retired the Saints in order in the seventh to claim the win.

Game Two:
The Chargers scored in the top of the first inning to once again grab an early 1-0 lead. The game turned into another pitcher's dual until the Saints even the score in the home half of the fifth. Joey Polak drove in Collin Turnbeaugh with a single to right field to make the score 1-1. Hillsdale regained the lead in the top of the eighth as they plated three runs to take a 4-1 advantage. Maryville pulled to within a run in the home half of the eighth as Tapella hit a two-run blast to left field to make the score 4-3. The Chargers put the game out of reach with six runs in the ninth inning to earn the series sweep.

Up Next: Maryville hits the road for the first time this season as the Saints travel to Springfield, Mo., for three games at USA Ballpark next weekend. Maryville will take on Drury in a non-conference contest Saturday, March 6, at noon. The Saints will then play Winona State at 3 p.m.
