Ben Brodie notched his first career hat trick, including the game-winner early in the second overtime period, to push the Maryville men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Missouri S&T Friday evening at Allgood-Bailey Stadium in Rolla, Mo.
What Happened – The Miners grabbed an early lead just 99 seconds into the contest with a goal that found the lower right side of the net to take a 1-0 lead over the Saints. The score remained that way for the rest of the half as Maryville outshot the Miners 8-4 in the first 45 minutes of the game.
Missouri S&T added a goal in the 60
th minute to extend the advantage to 2-0, but the Saints answered less than three minutes later. Brodie collected a pass from
Braden Johnson and slotted a shot into the lower right corner of the goal to cut the Miners lead to 2-1. Brodie scored the equalizer for Maryville in the 77
th minute with shot into the lower left side of the goal to even the score at 2-2.
The Saints had a pair of chances late in the first extra session as Brodie and
Andrew Schulz both saw shots sail just over the goal. Brodie ended the game in the 102
nd minute with a shot that found the left side of the net from five-yards out to send Maryville home with its seventh straight win to start the season.
Inside the Numbers – Brodie's hat trick is the first for the Saints since Pontus Gitselov scored three goals Nov. 1, 2017. Maryville outshot the Miners 21-6 in the match with seven being on frame. Brodie led the attack with five shots in the win.
