St. Charles, Mo. – Lindenwood scored a pair of goals in the first half and was able to withstand a furious second half comeback by the third-ranked Maryville men's soccer team as the Lions upended the Saints, 2-1 Friday evening at Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Mo.
What Happened – After a defensive battle over the first 30 minutes of the match, the Lions cracked the score first in the 31
st minutes off a corner kick to take a 1-0 lead over Maryville. The Saints had a chance to tie the game in the 40
th minute as
Tim Smith ripped a shot from the left wing that was knocked away by the Lindenwood goalkeeper. The Lions extended the lead in the 42
nd minute with a shot from 15-yards out to make the score 2-0.
Cedric Sengl cut the Lindenwood lead in half in the 58
th minute as he took a centering pass from Smith and ripped a shot from the top of the 18-yard box and found the lower left corner of the goal to make the score 2-1. The Saints had one final shot at tying the game in the 90
th minute as Smith had a shot blocked out of bounds as time expired in the match to give the Lions the upset victory.
Inside the Numbers – The Saints held a 17-9 advantage in shots with eight of those being on frame. Smith led the Maryville attack with three shots in the match.
