St. Louis – The Maryville baseball team dropped the series finale Sunday afternoon to Southern Indiana, 9-8 in a slugfest at Weber field. The Saints hammered four home runs on the day, two courtesy of
Ben Hopkins, but it was not enough as the Screaming Eagles claimed victory.
Game One:
The Screaming Eagles struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. The Saints answered emphatically with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Dominic Connolly found a hole in the left side of the infield to get on base, which gave way for
Joey Polak to launch his third long ball of the weekend and seventh of the season. Two pitches later, Hopkins sent his third homer of the year over the right field fence to make it a 3-1 ballgame. This was the first time the Saints had hit back-to-back home runs since May 2018.
Southern Indiana put up three runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Hopkins answered quickly for the Saints with his second homerun of the day to tie it up at 4-4. Three walks put the bases loaded for second baseman
Nick Hofmann. The sophomore hustled out an infield single allowing
Elias Stevens to score on the play and give the Saints a 5-4 advantage.
The Saints could not hold the lead, as the Screaming Eagles doubled their run total in the top of the fifth to give them an 8-5 lead.
Alex Hoff drove in
Matt Schuler in the bottom of the sixth for the Saints to cut the deficit to 8-6. In the home half of the seventh, Stevens chipped away at the lead with an RBI single to center, making the score 8-7.
The Screaming Eagles snagged an insurance run in the eighth, but Stevens launched a two-out solo shot to center field to get the Saints to within a run at 9-8. Maryville then had back-to-back singles to put the winning runs on base, but Southern Indiana got a strike out to secure the series victory.
