Volleyball Saints Drop Five-Set Contests to McKendree and Southwest Baptist

The Maryville volleyball team was facing a pair of Bearcat teams in a Great Lakes Valley Conference tri-match held in Bolivar, Mo. However, the Saints were narrowly edged out in two five-set contests by McKendree and Southwest Baptist.

The Maryville volleyball team was looking to win its second straight five-set match but McKendree narrowly edged the Saints 17-15 in the fifth to win 3-2. The Saints lost via set scores of 25-21, 12-25, 19-25, 15-17. In the final set, neither team led by more than two points. The Saints reached match point at 14-13 but McKendree saved it and went up 15-14. Hannah Scrum had a kill to tie the set but the Bearcats scored two straight to win it.
 
What Happened
Hannah Scrum recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs, while Mikaela Kues notched 12 kills while hitting .303 with six digs and five blocks. Taylor Hasbrook and Abbie Schnell led the Saints with 13 digs apiece, while Schnell also distributed 38 assists. The Saints outblocked McKendree 15.0 to 8.0 with Karolina Rodowski leading the way with eight blocks, while Avery Bell had six rejections. A.J. Hallemann also had double digit digs with 11.

Playing their third straight five-set contest, the Saints earned a match point but Southwest Baptist scored three consecutive points to win the final set 16-14 and the match 3-2. Mikaela Kues drilled down a career-high 16 kills to pace the attack. During the match, junior A.J. Hallemann recorded the 1,000th dig of her career, becoming the sixth Maryville player to reach that mark.
 
What Happened
In the fifth, the score was tied at 3-3 before SBU tallied three straight. The Saints answered on A.J. Hallemann's serve and went on an 8-0 run to take an 11-6 lead. Maryville was still up 13-8 before the Bearcats rallied to tie the set at 13-all. The Saints earned a match point after an SBU error until the home squad scored three straight to take the set at 16-14 and the match. Hannah Scrum recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 21 digs, while Abby Schnell dished out 59 assists. Taylor Hasbrook recorded a team-high 22 digs.
