Romeoville, Ill. – After Lewis and the Maryville men's soccer team held each other scoreless for over 80 minutes, the Flyers scored a pair of goals in the last eight minutes of the match to defeat the Saints 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium in Romeoville, Ill.
What Happened – The two teams battled to a scoreless tie after the first 45 minutes, but both squads had opportunities to score in the half as the Flyers put four shots on goal while Maryville had three shots on frame. The Flyers best chance came after the Saints were called for foul in the 18-yard box resulting in a penalty kick.
Liam Walraven stopped the Lewis chance with a diving save to keep the game tied at 0-0 in the 32
nd minute.
Maryville and Lewis continued to play on even terms until the 83
rd minute, when the Flyers broke through and scored on a shot from 10-yards out to take a 1-0 lead. Lewis added an insurance goal in the 88
th minute to push the score to 2-0.
Inside the Numbers – The Saints allowed a season high 17 shots in the match while having eight shots with three of those being on frame.
Emil Antonacci paced the Saints offense with three shots on the day.
