St. Louis – The Maryville men's soccer team surrendered a pair of goals in the first half and could not recover as Illinois Springfield defeated the Saints 4-1 Friday afternoon at Maryville Field. Despite the loss, Maryville will enter the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships as the No. 2 seed.
What Happened – The Prairie Stars opened the scoring just 18 second into the game as the Saints misplayed a ball in front of the net with UIS gaining control of the loose ball and scoring from 6-yards out to take the early lead. The Prairie Stars added a goal in the 20
th minute to extend the advantage to 2-0.
Illinois Springfield scored their third goal of the day in the three minutes into the second half to push the score to 3-0. The Saints cut into the Prairie Star lead in the 66
th minute as
Braden Johnson headed a free kick from
Cedric Sengl into the upper center of the net to make the score 3-1. The Prairie Stars added an insurance goal in the 79
th minute to secure the win.
Inside the Numbers – The Saints outshot Illinois Springfield 17-9 with eight shots being on frame.
Mirza Hasecic led the Saints attack with six shots while
JD Sohn and
Victor DeGiorgio each had three attempts.
