Charleston, Ill. – The Maryville baseball team could not hold on to their early lead against Eastern Illinois on Tuesday afternoon.
Michael Gould was a homerun shy of the cycle, but it was not enough as the Panthers used two four-run innings to claim the 10-3 win.
Game One:
The Saints wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in this non-conference matchup as Gould knocked a leadoff triple to right center field to open the game.
Matt Schuler drove him in with a sacrifice fly, making it a 1-0 ballgame in the first frame. The Panthers added a run of their own in the third inning to tie things up at 1-1.
In the fourth,
Elias Stevens launched his second homerun of the season to give the Saints a 2-1 advantage. Maryville added another run in the fifth as
Alex Hoff got on base via a walk and then turned on the jets to score from first on an RBI-double by Gould. Eastern Illinois answered by rattling off four runs in the bottom half of the fifth to give them a 5-3 lead.
The Panthers added a solo home run in the seventh inning and a grand slam in the eighth to extend the lead to 10-3 and claim the mid-week non-conference contest.
