St. Louis – The Maryville baseball team split a doubleheader with the University of Missouri - St. Louis on Saturday afternoon at Weber Field.
Tanner Marshall led the charge in the opener for the Saints, striking out nine batters and leading Maryville to a 4-1 victory. The Tritons took command early in the nightcap and the Saints could not recover, dropping the contest by a score of 10-8.
Game One:
The Saints jumped on the scoreboard first in the second inning after a pair of doubles by
Tyler Ward and
Nick Hofmann. Ward smoked a line drive over the center fielder and then was driven in by Hofmann as he launched his two-bagger to deep left field, giving the Saints a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, Hofmann dropped a bunt down the third base line to spark the Saints offense.
Alex Hoff proceeded to bring Hofmann home with a double to right center making it 2-0 Saints. Hoff kept the pressure on by stealing third and was able to walk home after forcing an errant throw, extending the Saints lead to 3-0.
Elias Stevens sent his third homerun of the season over the right field fence in the sixth inning to make it a 4-0 ballgame in favor of the Saints.
Tanner Marshall led the Saints from the mound, only allowing three hits and striking out nine Tritons, securing the 4-1 victory.

Game Two:
The Tritons offense came alive in the first inning of the nightcap, putting up five runs to start the contest. The crosstown rival added three more runs in the fifth inning to make it an 8-0 deficit.
In the fifth inning,
Dominic Connolly singled past the third baseman to drive in Hofmann and put the Saints on the scoreboard. Stevens kept the offense going with a bases loaded single, driving in
Michael Gould and making it an 8-2 ballgame.
Matt Schuler followed that up with a sacrifice fly to left brining in Connolly and making the score 8-3.
Maryville added three more runs in the sixth inning courtesy of a Gould three-run homer to right field to make the score 8-6. The Tritons responded in the top of the seventh with two of their own to make it a 10-6 score line.
In the bottom of the seventh, Hofmann singled down the left field line to bring home Stevens, making it 10-7. Maryville kept it interesting after a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded made it 10-8, but UMSL got out of the bases loaded jam to win it 10-8.
