St. Louis – The Maryville baseball team fell to No. 10 Lindenwood in extra innings on Friday afternoon at Weber Field. The Saints battled back from three deficits, but it was not enough as the Lions came away with the 10-9 victory in 11 innings.
Game One:
The Saints and Lions were locked in a pitcher's duel for four innings until the Lions broke through with a run in the fifth inning to take a 1-0 lead. Lindenwood knocked two homeruns in the sixth to extend their lead to 4-0.
Maryville answered back in the sixth inning after an
Alex Hoff walk and a
Dominic Connolly ground rule double put runners in scoring position.
Joey Polak brought Hoff home with a bloop single past the second baseman to make it a 4-1 ballgame.
The Lions extended their lead in the seventh with a sacrifice fly to take a 5-1 lead. The Saints fought all the way back in the seventh when Hoff launched a grand slam to left to tie it up 5-5.
In the top of the eighth, Lindenwood pushed across two runs to take a 7-5 lead. Maryville immediately answered yet again in the bottom half of the frame when
Elias Stevens smoked a clutch two-run homerun to right and tied the game 7-7.
Neither team could break the tie in the ninth, so we headed to extras. The Lions did not waste any time and scored in the top of the 10
th to take an 8-7 lead. The Saints weren't done yet as
Michael Gould drove in Connolly with a single to right and gave us our third tie of the game at 8-8.
