Indianapolis – No. 12 Maryville men's soccer team battled the fourth-ranked University of Indianapolis to a 1-1 draw Friday evening in a match-up of Top 25 teams at Key Stadium in Indianapolis. This is the third time in series history that the teams have played to a draw.
What Happened – The first 45 minutes saw both teams play to scoreless tie with the Saints holding a 5-2 advantage in shots. Maryville cracked the scoreboard in the 57
th minute as
Mirza Hasecic placed a header off a centering pass from
Grady Schliepsiek into the upper right corner of the goal to put Maryville on top 1-0.
The Greyhounds evened the contest in the 77
th minute with a goal into the upper left side of the net to make the score 1-1. The Saints had an opportunity to win the game in the waning seconds as Schliepsiek fired a shot that bounced off the post while Hasecic took the rebound and just missed to the right side of the goal as time expired to force the extra period.
After a quiet first extra session, Maryville had a pair of chance to win the game late in the second overtime as
Ricardo Andrade blasted a shot from 25-yards out that was blocked. Seconds later,
Victor DeGiorgio lifted a shot that glanced off the Greyhounds goalkeeper and sailed over the crossbar to keep the match tied.
Inside the Numbers – The Saints outshot UIndy 16-9 in the contest with five of those shots being on frame. Hasecic led the Maryville attack with five shots while
JD Sohn added four more attempts in the tie.
