Springfield, Ill. – The Maryville University men's soccer team took on the University of Illinois-Springfield Sunday afternoon to kick off the 2021 Great Lakes Valley conference campaign. The Saints could not muster up any offense and dropped the road contest 1-0.  
 
The Run of Play – Goalkeeper Nick Hemann made his first start of the season and made a critical save in the 10^th minute to keep the match scoreless. In the 27^th minute, the Prairie Stars scored off a free kick to take a 1-0 lead that they held into halftime.
 
The Saints struggled in the final third all game and only created one shot on goal in the second half courtesy of Mason Crew in the 87^th minute. Maryville fell by a score of 1-0 in the GLVC opener.
 
Inside the Numbers – Maryville won in the shots category (12-10), shots on goal category (3-2), and corners category (4-3).
