Quincy, Ill. – Junior
Emil Antonacci ripped the game-winning goal from distance Sunday afternoon for the Maryville University men's soccer team in a 3-2 win over Quincy University.
Â
The Run of Play – For only the second time all season, the Saints got on the scoreboard first courtesy of a
Mirza Hasecic goal in the 16
th minute. Senior
Ricardo Andrade slipped Hasecic past the Hawks back line and the midfielder slotted home his fourth goal of the season to give
David Korn's bunch a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Hawks came out of the halftime break firing and found two goals in the first five minutes of the second half to make it a 2-1 ballgame. Maryville climbed back into the game with a gorgeous passing sequence that led to Hasecic's second goal of the game in the 62
nd minute. Three seniors connected on the goal with
Grady Schliepsiek playing
Ben Brodie into space, who drew out the Hawks 'keeper and then played an unselfish ball back to the six-yard box for a tap-in finish from Hasecic.
Â
Three minutes later in the 65
th minute, Antonacci collected a pass from
Cedric Sengl and ripped an early candidate for goal of the season from 30-yards out into the upper left corner to give the Saints the lead once again at 3-2.
Â
Quincy pressed for the final 25 minutes and had a great chance that was denied by goalkeeper
Liam Walraven in the 87
th minute. Maryville cleared out the two chances Quincy had in the waning seconds and walked away with a 3-2 victory.
Â
Inside the Numbers – These two teams met back in April for the GLVC tournament semifinals, and the Saints won by the same 3-2 score line. This also marks a six-game unbeaten streak for the Saints over the Hawks (5-0-1) dating back to 2017.
