DeGiorgio Nets OT Winner Against #3 Lynn

St. Louis, Mo. – The Maryville University men's soccer team opened the regular season with a thrilling 2-1 overtime win Friday night against #3 Lynn University. Sophomore Victor DeGiorgio slotted home the winner with 38 seconds remaining in the first overtime period.

The Run of Play – The Fighting Knights took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute and that score held into the halftime break.

The Saints leveled the match in the 54th minute courtesy of a 25-yard Mirza Hasecic free kick that bent around the wall and past the diving goalkeeper. Both teams had chances in the final 30 minutes of regulation, but neither could find the back of the net and the first match of the year went to overtime.

Maryville only needed one shot in overtime to secure the victory and it came in the 100th minute with seconds to spare in the period. Hasecic played a perfectly weighted through ball to DeGiorgio and he slipped a shot past the 'keeper to give the Saints a 2-1 victory.

Inside the Numbers – The #3 ranked Lynn University is the highest ranked opponent the men's soccer program has ever beaten. The previous high was a 2-0 win over #7 Missouri S&T in 2011.

Records – Maryville – 1-0-0
                 Lynn – 0-1-0

Next Up – The men's soccer team is back on the pitch Sunday, Sept. 5, at home against Davenport University. Kickoff against the Panthers is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
