ST. LOUIS – Maryville University men's soccer battled to a scoreless tie with the University of Missouri – St. Louis on Friday afternoon. Both teams put two shots on goal in the second half before time expired on the 0-0 draw.
The 22nd-ranked Saints remain in first place after Friday's match at 7-1-2 (23 points) in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. They additionally move to 8-4-2 overall in 2022.
After an uneventful start to the first half,
Cameron Caldwell had a strong scoring opportunity in the 30th minute. The junior from Kansas City, Mo., cut in front of the goalkeeper with possession and sent a ball off the left woodwork to set up a UMSL goal kick.
Later on, Maryville earned the first shot on goal three minutes into the second half when
Tim Smith was turned away by Triton goalkeeper Austin Reis.
Eyob Tadesse followed up in the 63rd minute with a shot to the top of the goal off of a free kick. The attempt was tracking into the net before Reis got up to make the save in the left corner.
UMSL made a push at the game's first goal in the final five minutes. At 85:43,
Albert Escuin picked up a save on Drew Schenk. His late-game heroics continued when Tommy Naumann put a high shot on goal with five seconds left but turned it away to seal up a 0-0 draw.
Next up for the men's soccer team is a Senior Day matchup on Sunday, Oct. 16, against Missouri S&T. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at the Maryville Soccer Field.
