Antonacci Gives Saints Upset Win Over No. 17 Rockhurst

ST. LOUIS – Emil Antonacci's goal 21 seconds in gave Maryville men's soccer a 1-0 upset victory over No. 17 Rockhurst University on Sunday afternoon. The Saints ran their winning streak to four games while creating more separation as the front-runners in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings.
 
David Korn's team now sits at 7-3-1 overall and 6-0-1 in GLVC play. They have additionally won six of their last seven games and picked up their second ranked win of 2022.
 
The Saints came ready to play in front of a packed Homecoming crowd. The home team took the opening kickoff and moved it into the attacking zone to Cedric Sengl who attempted to send a ball into the box. Emil Antonacci had the deflection roll right into his wheelhouse and he fired a rocket under the crossbar for a 1-0 lead.
 
Maryville went on to dominate the remainder of the first half, outshooting Rockhurst 8-0 with three shots on goal.
 
At 69:20, Jacopo Belardo attempted to tie the game, but Saints goalkeeper Albert Escuin slammed the door shut for his only save. The Hawks got a single shot off the remainder of the match, handing Maryville a 1-0 Homecoming game victory.
 
Next up for the men's soccer team is a road contest on Friday, Oct. 7 with Drury University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Springfield, Mo.
