SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Maryville University men's soccer team fell 2-1 to the Drury University Panthers on Friday evening. After getting a game-tying goal from
Cedric Sengl at 79:41, Drury struck back with less than four minutes remaining with the go-ahead goal.
Â
With the loss, the Saints drop their Great Lakes Valley Conference record to 6-1-1 and their overall record to 7-4-1.
Â
Maryville outshot the home team 10-0 in a scoreless first half, forcing the Panther goalkeeper to make three saves. It was Drury, however, who scored first in the second half after a goal by Nathan Logue at 53:58.
Â
The Saints continued to grind through the second half and watched as their hard work paid off at 79:41.
Kelvin Mulinya moved the ball into the box and crossed to an open
Cedric Sengl who one-timed a shot for his third goal of the season to knot things up at 1-1.
Â
Seven minutes later, the Panthers had possession of the ball in the box and sent a shot attempt toward the goal that got blocked. They retained control and sent a second shot on goal that a scrambling
Albert Escuin denied. The Panthers again got the rebound and centered to Sebastian Smeed for the game-winning goal.
Â
Next up for men's soccer is another road conference matchup on Sunday, Oct. 9 against Southwest Baptist University. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. in Bolivar, Mo.
