ST. LOUIS – Maryville M1 Hockey hockey split a two-game set with Illinois State University over the weekend. The Saints earned a 3-2 shootout victory over the Redbirds on Friday night in Bloomington, Illinois, and dropped their home matchup 1-4 on Saturday.
Â
In Friday's win, the Saints found themselves down 2-1 with 90 seconds left in the game. Maryville pulled their goalie for the extra attacker and got the equalizer from senior captain
Jack Harrison with 30 seconds remaining in regulation. The Saints went on to win 3-2 by a 1-0 shootout decision.Â
Â
Jake Chartier started Saturday's scoring just 10 seconds into the game. The Redbirds recovered, however, posting four unanswered goals to take game two by a final score of 4-1.
Â
"We were certainly not at our best this weekend," said Head Men's Hockey Coach
John Hogan. "For ranking purposes, the Friday score goes in a tie, so really not our best showing on Friday or Saturday. Illinois State was the better team this weekend and I thought our guys let off the gas a bit after a successful trip to Central Oklahoma last weekend. Any team can win in this league on any night, and hopefully, our group can learn that lesson and be better for it moving forward. I'm excited to see our response next Thursday against McKendree."
The split moves the Saints to 4-2 heading into their next contest on Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Maryville University Hockey Center against the McKendree Bearcats. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:15 p.m.
