Saints Advance to NCAA Third Round Over Lewis in PKs

ST. LOUIS – Maryville University men's soccer advanced past Lewis University 5-4 in penalty kicks in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday. This is the second time in four years that the Saints have advanced to the third round and will play host for the next two rounds of the bracket. Maryville will take on Parkside at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, with Lake Erie and Illinois Springfield playing prior at 10 a.m. The quarterfinal is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m. at Maryville Field.

Lewis started quickly in the first half with a pair of shots on goal in the first ten minutes. Starting goalkeeper Albert Escuin denied both to kick off a six-save performance. Victor DeGiorgio followed up in the 19th minute but was turned aside by Flyer netminder Sebastian Doppelhofer.

With time expiring in the first half, Charles Carlback put a low shot toward the center of the goal but Escuin scooped it up to keep the game scoreless after one. Both teams tallied five shot attempts in the first 45 minutes, with shots on goal at 3-1 in favor of the visitors.

Still scoreless later in the second half, conference championship hero Jimmy Doherty put one on the net in the 76th minute but was rejected by Doppelhofer. Now with under five minutes, Cedric Sengl had one of the best scoring chances of the afternoon but a shot to the bottom right was saved as well.

Emil Antonacci nearly gave the Saints the lead in the first overtime at 95:52 before Doppelhofer made his fifth save followed by his sixth in the 98th minute on Bryce Glisson.

A scoreless second overtime period ended play at 0-0 and brought penalty kicks. The first eight combined attempts were successful until Lewis missed high over the goal.

Eyob Tadesse, with a chance similar to his winning PK in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Quarterfinals against Missouri S&T, converted once again to send the Saints to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

Next up is a matchup with Parkside on Thursday, Nov. 17. Maryville will play host to the NCAA Third Round and Quarterfinals as the highest remaining seed in the region.
