ST. LOUIS – Maryville University men's soccer defeated the University of Wisconsin-Parkside 2-0 Thursday to move into the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals.
Albert Escuin's fourth consecutive shutout, backed by goals from
Bryce Glisson and
Sebastian Weitlaner, advanced the Saints into the quarterfinals for the first time since 2019.
Â
The Saints improve their record in 2022 to 12-4-5 overall and extend their defensive scoreless run to 467 minutes. The last goal they surrendered was in the 23rd minute of the GLVC Quarterfinals against Missouri S&T before they overcame a two-goal deficit to advance.
Â
The Rangers earned an early corner kick in the fifth minute that Maryville defended well. On the counter-attack, Tim Smith got an open look at the goalkeeper in the box but had a low shot turned away.
Â
Three minutes later, Erick Villalobos sent Saints goalkeeper Albert Escuin sprawling for a save on a low attempt. Parkside continued to apply pressure at 10:41 with a shot that missed just right.
Â
At the 17-minute mark, Cedric Sengl was one-on-one with Ranger keeper Robin Hermann and sent a low shot on goal that Hermann denied with a sliding kick-save. On the ensuing corner, Sengl found Bryce Glisson, and the junior from Edwardsville, Ill., headed the ball home for a 1-0 advantage.
Â
Still up 1-0 at halftime, Maryville waited less than two minutes to strike again. Another corner was defended away by Parkside before Carl Norby gained possession and found freshman Sebastian Weitlaner for his fifth goal of the season.
Â
The visitors made Escuin work in the second half, forcing him to make three more saves. The Torrent, Valencia, Spain, native shutdown the Rangers to hang on to another victory in the NCAA Tournament, and his fourth consecutive shutout in postseason play.
Â
Next up for men's soccer is a tournament quarterfinal matchup with Lake Erie College Saturday, Nov. 17. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Maryville Soccer Field.
