Saints Defense Clamps Down on William Jewell 63-47; Fearday Tallies Career-High 20 Points

Liberty, Mo. – Led by a career-high 20 points from Carsyn Fearday and a double-double by Taylor Kirby, the Maryville women's basketball team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 63-47 victory at William Jewell. Fearday sank 9-of-13 shots from the field, while Kirby notched her second straight double-double on 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The Saints took early command by scoring the first eight points of the game and never let the Cardinals back in front. Haidyn Pitsch opened the game with a jumper, and Fearday scored in transition. Kirby tallied a layup, and Antoinette Mussorici grabbed an offensive rebound for a bucket and an 8-0 lead. WJC final scored its first points at the 4:18 mark as the Saints cruised to a 14-4 lead after one quarter. Maryville used a 7-0 run, took its first double-digit lead at 26-15, and settled for a 29-19 edge at halftime.
 
Olivia Kastens sank a 3-pointer midway through the third quarter as the Saints went up by 38-25. The Cardinals inched back into the game and closed the gap to 42-34 heading into the final quarter. Fearday opened the fourth with three straight buckets as the Saints retook a double-digit advantage of 48-34. The cushion grew to as many as 19 as the Saints posted their best defensive output of the year in limiting the Cardinals to only 47 points.
