St. Louis -
Jimmy Doherty slotted home the game-winning goal at the 106:24 mark of double overtime to boost the Maryville University men's soccer team to the championship of the 2022 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament by a 1-0 score over Lewis. The title is the third GLVC Tournament Championship for the Saints, joining the 2018 and spring 2021 championship teams.
Â
After a scramble in front of the Lewis net off a corner kick,
Alberto Di Pierri found Doherty through traffic. Doherty pivoted and fired in a left-footed shot low into the right side netting for the championship-winning score.
Â
Both teams had scoring chances in the first half but Saints goalie
Albert Escuin made three saves, while Lewis' keeper Sebastian Doppelhofer stopped two Saints shots. The Flyers had an excellent scoring opportunity early in the second half but Escuin again denied the visitors. Doherty had a chance late in but his attempt was saved as the game moved into overtime.
Â
In the first extra session,
Kelvin Mulinya floated a pass over the middle that
Mason Crew one-timed towards the right post. However, Doppelhofer made a splendid one-armed save that kept the game scoreless. Lewis' Zahkar Shkidchenko put a long shot on frame but Escuin made his seventh save of the game. Doherty then fired in the winning goal for the Saints.
Â
The victory gives the Saints the automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Division II Tournament. The tourney field and bracket will be unveiled Monday, Nov. 7, at 5:30 p.m. via a selection show on the NCAA website –
