Houston - The Maryville baseball team closed out play at the Houston Invitational by rolling to a 12-2 victory over Arkansas-Monticello Sunday at Minute Maid Park.
Joey Polak launched a two-run blast, and
Nolan Miller allowed only two hits in five shutout innings of mound work.
Â
Arkansas-Monticello scored twice in the top of the first but the Saints tied the game with two in the bottom of the second.
Elias Stevens walked and eventually came around to score on a Burrell RBI grounder.
Jamie Young, who also walked in the frame, later sprinted home on a passed ball.
Â
The score remained tied at 2-2 until the Saints pushed across three in the bottom of the fifth.
Andy Bunton walked and scored on a
Dominic Connolly RBI single to center. After a Polak single, both runners moved up one base, and Connolly scored on a throwing error. Polak also touched home after a wild pitch for a 5-2 lead.
Â
Maryville broke the game open with four runs in the sixth. Bunton singled and
Michael Gould walked. The duo eventually scored on a Connolly single and a 7-2 margin. Polak hammered a two-run shot to left field and a 9-2 advantage. Young drove in the 10th run of the game, and Bunton's double down the line in left ended the game via run rule.
Â
Miller came on in the first inning and spun five shutout innings while recording seven strikeouts. He only allowed two singles to pick up the win for the Saints.
Â
The Saints are next in action when they host the home opening series Saturday, Feb. 26, as Hillsdale comes to Weber Field.
