Saints Ride Five Home Runs to a Pair of Wins Over Truman State

ST. LOUIS – Maryville University powered their way to a pair of wins over Truman State University on Saturday behind five home runs and a complete-game gem from Ryan Louck.

The Saints improved their record to 5-4 after taking game one with a 6-2 final and shut down a Bulldog comeback bid in game two to win 7-6.

Saints' starting pitcher Ryan Louck worked out of a jam in the top half of the first inning in game one after Alex Hoff threw out a runner trying to score from second on a single. In the bottom half, an error set the stage for an Elias Stevens two-run home run to put his team up early.

Maryville added two more in the second. The first two batters of the inning were set down before Hoff tripled to bring up Jackson Burrell, who promptly homered to make it a 4-0 game.

The Bulldogs struck back in the top of the third with a two-RBI single to center off the bat of Brennan Perkins. A Brad Willis single in the bottom of the third and a Hoff home run in the sixth eventually widened the lead to 6-2.

After surrendering just two runs in the third, Louck settled down and picked up a complete-game victory for his first win of the season. The junior from Plainfield, Illinois, ended with seven strikeouts, five hits, and two earned runs over seven innings of work.

The home team continued to show off their power early in game two with a pair of blasts. Joey Polak hit a no-doubter over the left-field wall to put the Saints up 1-0 after one, followed by Hoff's two-run home run in the bottom of the second.

A four-run fourth inning from Truman State gave them their first lead of the afternoon. The Saints, however, shut that down in a hurry.

Brad Willis singled to start the bottom of the fourth for Maryville followed by an Andy Bunton single and a walk from Burrell to bring up the leadoff hitter Michael Gould. The sophomore stepped to the plate and smoked a three-run triple into the right-center gap to put his team back on top.

Truman got one back on a home run in the fifth before Stevens got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth to restore a two-run lead. The Bulldogs threatened to tie the game in the top of the seventh after a two-out home run cut the deficit in half. Luckily for the home crowd, reliever Nolan Miller capped off a nice relief outing by getting the next hitter out to seal it.

Miller picked up the win after 3.1 solid innings out of the bullpen. Jacob Kroeger started the game, collecting six strikeouts while allowing four runs (two earned) over 3.2 innings.

The Saints will look to finish off a series victory and stay above the .500 mark on Sunday against the Bulldogs at noon.
