ST. LOUIS – Maryville M1 Hockey Head Coach
John Hogan was named the Midwest College Hockey Conference Coach of the Year after guiding the Saints to the regular season and conference tournament championships.
Â
Hogan coached Maryville to a 14-2 record in conference play before defeating McKendree and Illinois State to take the conference tournament championship. The Saints had an overall 2021-22 record of 23-8-1, qualifying for the National Tournament as the no. 14 national seed.
Â
In the national tournament, the Saints took down John Carroll University 4-0 in the first round but lost in round two against Iowa State.
Â
Hogan has coached Maryville's top men's team since the program's inception. In 2018-19, Hogan coached the inaugural men's D2 team before adding another team and moving to the D1 ranks. Over the next four years, Hogan's teams have consistently improved, reaching new heights this season. The Saints were ranked as high as ninth nationally before finishing the season as the 14th-ranked team in the country.
Â
"I'm very proud of the growth our program has had over the past four years. It's truly amazing how far we have come. This recognition belongs to our whole team and staff for what we have accomplished as a group this season and how far we have come in four seasons. I'm extremely grateful to our staff and all the hard work they continue to do to make Maryville a special place to grow off the ice and a perennial national tournament contender on the ice."
Â
In addition, the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) announced the finalists for the 2022 Men's Division 1 Coach of the Year and Hogan was one of the five finalists selected by his peers. All 68 teams in the league cast a ballot after the season ends. Other finalists include Lindenwood's Rick Zombo, UCO's Michael Rivera, Minot State's Wyatt Waselenchuk, and Niagara's Tom Mooradian.
Â
Hogan and the Saints will take on a new challenge next year after being added to the Central States Collegiate Hockey League (CSCHL) along with Lindenwood, Iowa State, Illinois, and Ohio.
