Saints Hit 30-Win Mark for First Time in Program History

ST. LOUIS – Maryville University baseball earned their 30th win for the first time in program history with a doubleheader sweep over the University of Missouri–St. Louis on Saturday afternoon. The Saints won game one 7-1 behind a complete game from Ben Prywitch and took game two 5-0 on six shutout innings from Ryan Louck.
 
Game One Recap
Ben Prywitch kept the Tritons scoreless through the first three innings while his offense went to work in the third. Joey Polak drove in the game's first run with a single to left field, followed by two more RBI singles from Elias Stevens and Michael Gould to open a 4-0 lead.
 
In the fifth, the Saints extended their lead to 5-0 on a solo home run from Stevens that cleared the centerfield fence. The home team did not respond until the bottom of the sixth when they pushed across their first run on a wild pitch.
 
Michael Gould widened the lead further in the top of the seventh with a single to left field. Now up 7-1, the Saints sent out Prywitch in the bottom half and he did not disappoint. The redshirt sophomore from Chesterfield, Missouri, set down the side in order to finish off the complete game and to improve his 2022 record to 7-0.

Game Two Recap
Again, the Saints struck first with a run in the second. Gould walked and stole second to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a dropped third strike to bring up Tyler Ward. The catcher then laid down a sacrifice bunt to scratch across the game's first run.
 
Alex Hoff added to the lead in the top of the third with an RBI single to bring in Brad Willis who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Maryville extended the lead to 3-0 with another sacrifice bunt in the fourth inning, this time from Andy Bunton.
 
Starting pitcher Ryan Louck took the early lead and ran with it, shutting out the Tritons through the first four frames. In the next half inning, Hoff continued his big performance in the top of the fifth with a two-run home run to left field to put the Saints up by five.
 
Now with a hefty lead, Louck continued to shutout UMSL, ending his day with six innings pitched, six hits allowed, and five strikeouts. Drake Downing was brought out of the bullpen in the seventh and ended the game with a scoreless inning and two strikeouts.

The doubleheader sweep gave Maryville baseball their 30th win for the first time in program history. The 2022 team surpassed the previous record held by the 2019 squad who won 29 of their 51 games.
