Maryville Soccer Downs Davenport 1-0 for First Win

CALEDONIA, Mich. – Maryville men's soccer picked up their first win of the 2022 campaign with a 1-0 final on the road against Davenport University. The men move to 1-1-0 after two games behind a shutout from goalkeeper Nick Hemann and a second-half goal from freshman Sebastian Weitlaner.

The visiting Saints were in control early on in the game, outshooting the home team 5-1 through the first 18 minutes of the game. At 18:29, starting goalie Nick Hemann earned his first save of the night, turning away a shot from Eoin Broughan to keep things scoreless.

Later in the half, Emil Antonacci tallied a shot on goal at 25:44. Maryville maintained offensive zone pressure over the next few minutes, earning a pair of corner kicks and a shot from Cedric Sengl that sailed wide right. Fabian Wetl got the final shot of the half off at 42:57 before the two teams went into the break knotted up at 0-0.

Hemann's second save just two minutes into the second half kept Davenport off the board and opened the door to take the lead in the 50th minute. After a Davenport foul second prior, Sengl found Sebastian Weitlaner for the 1-0 advantage and the first goal of his collegiate career.

The Panthers attempted an immediate answer at 50:54 on a shot from Andrew Dykstra, but Hemann was once again up to the task. The Saints would not allow another shot attempt for the remainder of the game, picking up their first win of the 2022 campaign to move to 1-1-0.

"I was incredibly proud of how well the men played today," said Head Men's Soccer Coach David Korn. "We want to continue to improve and today was our best performance in any of our matches through the preseason. It was great to see how we responded to some adversity and that will be useful for us in a long season."

Next on the docket is a matchup with Christian Brothers University in Maryville's home opener. Kickoff is scheduled for Thursday, September 1. at 5 p.m.
