Saints Soccer Loses 2-0 to CBU in Home Opener

ST. LOUIS – The Saints men's soccer team was shutout 2-0 by Christian Brothers University in its home opener on Thursday evening. The Saints were looking for their second straight victory on the season.

Maryville got off to a promising start as Bryce Dickerson missed just left from in front of the goal two minutes into the contest. Tim Smith took a shot in the eighth minute but was turned aside by starting Bucs goalie Max Klink.

Cedric Sengl took a strong scoring opportunity and missed narrowly to the left of the goal at the 15:05 mark, followed soon by pressure from the visitors. Nick Hemann picked up a save in the 18th minute, but CBU kept pressing.

The visitors eventually found the back of the net at 26:51 to open up a 1-0 lead on a goal off the leg of Ryoya Yoshikawa. Saints Forward Bryce Glisson tried to knot the game at one but missed right of the goal in the 35th minute.

A slow start to the second half eventually led to another Bucs goal in the 69th minute to double their lead at 2-0. David Korn's team did not stop fighting for the rest of the game, getting off a few more shots including one on goal from Victor DeGiorgio, but eventually fell 2-0 to drop to 1-2 in the new campaign.

The Saints will get back at it on the road on Sunday, Sept. 4, in a neutral site matchup against Northeastern State University. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Springfield, Mo.
