Saints, Flyers Tie 1-1 After Trading Late Goals

ST. LOUIS – Maryville University men's soccer tied Lewis University 1-1 on Sunday afternoon after the teams exchanged goals in the game's final minutes. Tim Smith put the Saints ahead with a goal at 79:36 followed a few minutes later by a Flyer penalty kick goal at 84:57.

Jimmy Doherty got the game off on the right foot for his club with a shot on goal at 3:35. Cedric Sengl wasted little time, grabbing the rebound and firing high 11 seconds later.

Victor DeGiorgio tested the goalkeeper again at 27:08 toward the top of the net, but Sebastian Doppelhofer was up to the task. Maryville went on to outshoot the Flyers 4-1 in the first half before heading into halftime tied at one.

More pressure from the home offense came early in the half when freshman Sebastian Weitlaner ripped a shot from inside the box before he was turned away by the goalie.  Weitlaner gave it another go with a low shot on net at 57:24 but again was stopped by Doppelhofer.

As the game continued to grow more physical with the go-ahead goal on the line, Mirza Hasecic moved the ball into the box at 79:34 and flipped up a pass to DeGiorgio. DeGiorgio jumped and headed the ball to an open Smith who settled and finished the game's first goal with his right foot.

Lewis, desperate for a goal as time ran down, found Justin Darlage in the box before he was fouled hard. The junior defender took advantage of the penalty kick opportunity with a goal to the lower left portion of the net at 84:57.

Sengl, coming off his two-goal performance in Friday's contest, made one last attempt at the game-winner in the final minute. The Saints switched fields in the offensive zone with a high arching pass to the streaking forward with 45 seconds left. Sengl stuck out his right foot and put a hard shot on without settling before the attempt rang off the left woodwork.

The tie moves Maryville men's soccer to 3-3-1 overall in 2022 and 2-0-1 in conference play. Next up for the Saints is a road trip to Kirksville, Mo. where they will take on Truman State University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
