KIRKSVILLE, Mo. –
Victor DeGiorgio's historic seven-point night led the Maryville men's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Truman State University on Friday evening. The junior from Toronto netted his first three goals of the season as the Saints went on to dominate offensively while allowing just a single shot on defense.
With his massive performance, DeGiorgio secured the first men's soccer hat trick since
Ben Brodie's on March 19, 2021, in a 3-2 double-overtime victory over Missouri S&T. Additionally, he became the first Saint to score seven points in a game in Maryville's NCAA Division II era.
Immediately following a Truman State free kick,
Fabian Wetl forced a turnover at midfield and moved it into home territory. Moments later,
Tim Smith found
Cedric Sengl in the middle of the box. The captain quickly passed to DeGiorgio who rocketed in his first goal of the season.
The Saints carried their momentum throughout the remainder of the half, taking eight of the next nine shots in the first half while allowing one shot against starting goalkeeper
Albert Escuin.
The visitors continued to pepper shots in the second half but were unable to find another goal until late in the game. With six and a half minutes remaining in the contest,
Eyob Tadesse moved the ball up the left side and passed to DeGiorgio who then found a wide-open
Mirza Hasecic on the other side of the box to put the Saints up 2-0.
A few minutes later, Tadesse again carried the ball into the attacking zone and found DeGiorgio in behind the defense for his second goal of the game and a massive lead for the Saints with 3:29 remaining.
DeGiorgio finished off his seven-point night and the hat trick when the Bulldogs failed to secure a loose ball in their defensive zone. The Saints forward came in and rifled a shot off a sprawling goalkeeper and into the top right corner for his third goal to top off a 4-0 Saints win.
Maryville men's soccer moves to 3-0-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play and 4-3-1 overall in 2022. Next up is another road matchup against Quincy University on Sunday, Sept. 25. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
