ST. LOUIS – The Maryville University women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 draw with Lewis University on Sunday afternoon. The Saints applied all kinds of offensive zone pressure in the second half, outshooting their Great Lakes Valley Conference counterpart 12-2, but ultimately the Flyers kept them off the scoresheet.
Lewis opened the game with a scoring chance in the fifth minute. The Flyer forward moved into the box in a one-on-one matchup with defenseman
Ulrika Bredin but was turned away by a slide tackle from the Gothenburg, Sweden native.
Four minutes later,
Lexi Gentry set up a free kick and put a perfectly placed shot under the crossbar that was saved by visiting goalkeeper Bekah Nielsen.
Sara Lawler followed up with another deep drive on goal at 10:26 but was also denied.
In the 26th minute, the Flyers came streaking into the box once again, but an aggressive tackle from goalkeeper
Katie Nash halted the run. The senior from De Soto, Mo., stepped up two minutes later with a pair of saves to keep the opposition off the board.
With time winding down in the first half, the ball found
Kennedy Reeser with the goalie out of the net, but her shot was blocked by a defender and sailed high.
The speedy Maryville forwards dominated the second half. Gentry found a wide-open
Ashlyne Hunt early in the new period who took the feed and made her way outside and passed the Lewis goalkeeper, but just a fraction too far as a shot attempt hit the side of the goal.
At 67:01,
Madison Canoy had a solid scoring chance but missed just high. Later in the half, Maryville had their best scoring chance when
Tori Calvert put a corner kick into the box at 73:38.
Sara Lawler won the fight for the ball and headed one on net to be stopped by the goalkeeper with a diving save.
In total, the Saints outshot the Flyers 12-2 in the second half and put six more shots on goal over the course of the entire game. The tie moves their record to 3-2-2 overall and 1-0-2 in GLVC play.
