DeGiorgio Nets Game-Winner in Saints’ 1-0 Victory Over Cardinals

ST. LOUIS – The Saints men's soccer team took a 1-0 victory over William Jewell College on Friday afternoon behind Victor DeGiorgio's goal in the sixth minute. The reigning Great Lakes Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week kept his hot play going with the fifth goal in his last three matches.

With the win, the Saints keep hold of first place in the conference at 5-0-1 in GLVC play. They have won five of their last six matches and are now 6-3-1 overall in 2022.

The Cardinals tested starting Saints goalkeeper Albert Escuin in the sixth minute with a header on the net that he turned away. Now on the counterattack, Maryville carried it deep into the offensive zone and sent it to Sebastian Weitlaner. The freshman found Cedric Sengl who tapped it to DeGiorgio for a 1-0 lead.

William Jewell had their best opportunity to tie things up at 16:06 when Carson Lee was fouled in the box for a penalty kick. Lee set up the one-on-one but his low shot to the right was denied by a diving Escuin.

The two teams exchanged shots on goal over the next few minutes. Looking to make it 2-0, Mirza Hasecic fired a shot at the net and rang it off the crossbar to keep the game tied. At 34:40, Escuin made his fourth save of the half to preserve a shutout and the advantage heading into halftime.

The Maryville defense stepped up in a major way in the second half. The group did not allow another shot for the remainder of the game to lock up a 1-0 win and Escuin's fourth shutout of the year.

"We are pleased to get a win today and happy with some good defensive and attacking plays," said Head Men's Soccer Coach David Korn. "This league is always a challenge and there are a lot of good teams, William Jewell is a good opponent. We are excited to build and learn from today as we get ready for our next game Sunday."

Up next for Maryville men's soccer is a Homecoming Game matchup against Rockhurst University on Sunday, Oct. 2. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
