LYNCHBURG, Va. – Brett Ursulak's last-minute Saturday goal helped Maryville M1 hockey to a weekend split with fourth-ranked Liberty University. The defenseman from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, scored with 6.3 seconds remaining to help the Saints to a 3-2 win after falling in a shootout on Friday.
Hunter Floris put the first goal on the board in Friday's contest, scoring with one second remaining in the first period off assists from
TJ Prexler and
Garrett Hunter. Liberty responded in the second period with two goals less than four minutes apart to take the lead.
At 16:35, Prexler added another point to the score sheet with a powerplay goal to tie the game. Regulation ended in a 2-2 tie, but the Saints were defeated 1-0 in a shootout after getting denied on three attempts.
Floris again started things on Saturday, picking up his fifth goal of the campaign at 3:52 to open a 1-0 Maryville lead. Sam Feamster responded nine minutes later to tie the game.
Timon Prexler scored his first of the season at 1:56 in the third before Mason Smith tied the game once again at 7:15.
With time winding down in the game,
Brett Ursulak recovered a loose puck at the point and snuck a screened shot past the Liberty goalie to give Maryville a 3-2 lead with 6.3 seconds remaining.
Kyle McNair earned the win in goal for the Saints, stopping 29 of 31 shots.
Maryville hockey now sits at 6-4-1 overall, including 2-1-1 over their last four games. Floris currently leads the team in points with 10 (5 G, 5 A), with
Sam Edwards leading the way with seven goals and
Timon Prexler with six assists.
The Saints are back at the Maryville University Hockey Center on Oct. 26, for an 8:15 p.m., start against McKendree University. They then hit the road for a two-game set with the University of Central Oklahoma beginning on Friday, Nov. 3.
