Volleyball Saints Drop Marathon Five-Set Match to Miners

Story Links

St. Louis - The Maryville volleyball team played a marathon five-set match against Missouri S&T but the Miners spoiled Senior Day with a taut win Saturday. Missouri S&T rallied for a 20-25, 25-16, 30-32, 25-21, 15-13 decision over the Saints. The loss for Maryville was the first time it lost a five-set match this season (5-1). Ella Brinkmann paced the Saints with 21 kills and tied her career high with 25 digs. Taylor Hasbrook came up with 28 digs, while Grace Knadler led the defense with seven blocks.

The Saints had their best hitting percentage to take the first set, while the Miners did the same in set two to even the match. The 1-1 tie set up a marathon third set. The Miners led for most of set three and were up 2017. The Saints rallied to tie matters, capped by Hanna Dressing's kill for 20-20. Knadler tied the set at 24-all as the game moved into extra points. The visitors had three set points but the Saints saved each one. At 30-30, the Miners committed a hitting error for a Maryville set point. Brinkmann and Knadler combined on the block for a thrilling 32-30 win. The 32 points are the most scored by the Saints in a set since tallying 32 against Northwood Oct. 13, 2018.

The Saints led set four 7-6 before the Miners jumped ahead on an 8-1 run. The Saints made a late push when Dressing had two kills and a block to trim the deficit to 23-20. However, the Miners tallied two of the last three points for a 25-21 win and set up a decisive fifth set.

Missouri S&T took a 6-5 lead in the fifth set before the Saints stormed ahead with four consecutive points. Brinkmann had a kill, and the Miners committed an error. Taylor Keck notched a kill, and a Missouri S&T error handed the Saints a 9-6 advantage. The Miners came back with their own 4-0 run.  The Saints tied the set at 11-11 but the Miners scored two straight. Caroline Glastetter pounded down a kill but the Miners tallied the next for match point. Brinkmann's kill extended the match but a Maryville error ended the match at 15-13.
