Kirksville, Mo. - The Maryville volleyball squad set a program record for Great Lakes Valley Conference wins in a season with seven in a 3-1 triumph at Truman State. The Saints prevailed Thursday in Kirksville by a 25-14, 23-25, 25-16, 25-19 score. The duo of
Ella Brinkmann and
Caroline Glastetter had 14 kills apiece to pace the Maryville attack.
Taylor Hasbrook came up with 21 digs, while
Abbie Schnell had 26 assists.
Holding a 4-3 edge in set one, the Saints reeled off six straight points to stretch out their advantage.
Ella Brinkmann started the run with a kill, and
Makenna Brauman followed with an ace. After Truman committed an error, and Brinkmann drilled in a kill.
Rachel Schipper served an ace, and
Grace Knadler's finish put the Saints up 10-4. Later, Brinkmann hammered down a kill, and Brauman recorded a solo block and a kill. After a Brauman kill,
Grace Graham notched a solo kill as Maryville grabbed a double-digit lead and cruised to a 25-14 decision.
Set two was close the entire way and featured nine ties. The Saints took a narrow lead at 16-15 on a TSU error but the hosts scored four straight points. Maryville tied the score at 23-all on a Brinkmann kill but the Bulldogs scored two straight to even the match.
Maryville was down 5-2 but roared into the lead by using an 8-0 spree. Brinkmann started the run with a kill and tacked on a solo block. Another rejection by Knadler put the Saints ahead 6-5, and a Truman miscue handed Maryville a 10-5 cushion. The Bulldogs finally scored with the Saints tacking on three straight points, including back-to-back kills by
Taylor Keck. The Maryville defense forced three straight Truman miscues en route to a 16-7 advantage. Truman got as close as six points but the Saints eased to a 25-16 decision.
Truman opened the fourth by scoring the first two points before the Saints scored five unanswered points. Carolina Glastetter started the run with consecutive kills, with Dressing adding two more, and a Brinkmann kill good for a 5-2 advantage. Maryville went up 9-4 after another Schipper ace and pushed its advantage to 14-7. Truman State chipped away at the deficit and eventually tied the set at 17-17. Brinkmann pushed the Saints back on top with a kill and she combined with Knadler for a block to get to 19-17. The Bulldogs scored a point until the Saints took control with four consecutive scores and closed out the win.
