St. Louis – The Maryville men's basketball team saw a late 6-0 Quincy run hand the Saints a 71-66 defeat Saturday afternoon. For the second straight game,
Dewayne Vass scored 21 points to power the Maryville offense.
Ari Jackson and
Anthony Holden both added 11 points apiece. Vass had an excellent all-round game as he added five rebounds, five assists and four steals to the Maryville efforts.
Quincy recap
With just under three minutes to play, the Saints were down 62-58. Vass had a layup, and after a defensive stop,
Luke Williams sank a difficult layup in traffic to tie the game 62-62 with 1:12 left. After a timeout, QU scored on a three-point play. The Saints were looking for the answer but the Hawks came up with a steal and layup for a 67-62 lead. Maryville had a look at the basket but a layup rimmed out, and Quincy made one free throw. Williams had a layup before QU sank one free throw. Vass drove the lane for a layup to cut the gap to 69-66 but Zion Richardson sank two free throws with 5.7 seconds left to seal the win.

The Saints scored seven straight points to take the early 7-3 lead.
Anthony Holden sank a 3-pointer, and Williams had a layup. Two at the free-throw line built an 8-3 edge for Maryville.
Tutu Chisholm and
Trey Redd back back-to-back buckets for a 12-5 lead. A Holden triple, and a three-point play by Vass built Maryville's largest lead of the day at 20-12. The Saints stayed in front, and were up 27-19 after a Williams layup. A late
Ari Jackson triple was good for a 32-25 lead at halftime.

Maryville's margin was still 41-39 after two
JT Morgan free throws but the Hawks scored five straight to take the lead. The Saints answered with a 10-0 burst to jump back ahead. Vass and two layups and a 3-pointer, and a try by Jackson was good for a 51-44 lead with 9:38 remaining.
Davis Walker converted a layup as the Saints still were in front 57-52 with seven minutes to go. The Hawks scored seven straight to set up their late-game push.
