Roos Drives in Five, Saints Win Series Over Saginaw Valley

ST. LOUIS – Zeb Roos drove in five runs on Sunday to give Maryville baseball a 6-3 win over Saginaw Valley State University. The Saints improve their 2023 record to 2-4 and win their first series of the year.

Recap
Maryville starting pitcher Ryan Louck found himself in trouble in the first inning after a pair of walks, but worked out of the jam to keep the visitors off the board. In the bottom half, the Cardinals also walked a pair of hitters to set the stage for a Zeb Roos three-run home run, his first with the Saints.

A double and an error on a bunt single cut the Maryville lead down to two in the top of the second. The home team built the lead back up to 4-1 in the bottom half on a bases-loaded walk from Elias Stevens.

Louck coasted through the next couple of innings before a call to the bullpen brought in Ben Prywitch. The graduate student from Plainfield, Ill., ended the day with four hits allowed, three unearned runs, and three strikeouts over five innings of work.

Prywitch kept the Cardinals quiet in the sixth, but they scored a pair of runs with the help of a few Saint errors in the seventh to close the gap to 4-3. Jack Zebig and Michael Gould started the bottom of the seventh with singles. SVSU got the next two hitters out before surrendering a two-RBI double to Roos to put the Saints up 6-3 with two innings to play.

A scoreless eighth inning brought on a Cardinal comeback bid in the ninth. SVSU loaded the bases on Prywitch with two outs, but the left-handed reliever got the final out on a fly ball to secure his first save of the season, a 6-3 victory, and the first series win of the 2023 campaign.
